Research on Performance Assessment of Headlamps with Adaptive Front-lighting Systems

Technology to change radiation direction of headlamps (Adaptive front-lighting system [AFS]) adjusted to the road curve has been developed to improve visibility when driving in darkness. However, the luminous intensity distribution cannot be varied freely as the drivers of the oncoming vehicles may be subjected to glare. Therefore, performance requirements must be defined from a safety standpoint. We are studying movement of the driver¡s eyes and assessing safety under various driving and luminous intensity distribution conditions of headlamps by utilizing a computer simulation.
