Welcome to the National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory website.
While modes of transportation such as motor vehicles and trains, which are invaluable to our daily lives, have enriched our lifestyle and made it more convenient, they have caused serious social problems in the form of traffic accidents and pollution.
Protection of the environment and ensuring safety serve as cornerstone administrative objectives of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory plays a supportive role in achieving these goals. Our activities include experimental research related to environmental protection, technical screening of motor vehicles in addition to ensuring the safety of motor vehicles, railways and airlines.
In practice, this means we conduct research in the Environment Research Department to find efficient uses of energy, to prevent global warming, to reduce noise and air pollution and to improve the regional environment. In the Automotive Safety Research Department we research safety improvements for motor vehicle structural devices and the communication of information. In the Traffic System Research Department we research technology and investigate accidents for city railways as well as technological improvements for lighting systems on airstrips. Our Automobile Type Approval Test Department screens new motor vehicles to ensure their compliance with safety and environmental regulations and conducts international mutual recognition work for motor vehicle devices.
The National Traffic Safety and Environment Laboratory was founded in April 2001 as a new independent administrative organization, taking on the responsibilities of the preceding Traffic Safety and Nuisance Research Institute. As a neutral testing and research institute supporting the national administration of land, infrastructure and transport, we strive to fulfill our role in an efficient and transparent manner and aim to contribute to the creation of a society that ensures safe and environmentally friendly transportation. |
